NEW FAll Sewing & Millinery Classes for Adults and Children

It has been a very creative, exciting and productive year thus far at Thistle Cottage Studio!!  Many of our students are planning to return this summer, making it our busiest season on record!!  The best kept secret in RI maybe has finally leaked out!!  Our Sunday Mommy&Me; beginner sewing class is as popular as ever, and our little ones (ages 7-9 years old) have produced some very impressive projects!!  Children of this age range must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. This year, our students (ages 7 -12 years old), enjoyed our Closet Monsters project, where they got to design and make a Closet Monster from old recycled clothes, that also taught the lesson of keeping waste out of the landfills whenever possible, for a greener planet!!  The project kicked off with a party to honor the event, with contests for the best sketches, hilarious biographies for each monster written by the students, with prizes and desserts.    Many Beginner Sewing Skills students created some really fabulous duffle bags, lounge pants, skirts, and aprons!!  More advanced students created prom dresses, jackets, skirts, day dresses, a bathrobe, pajamas, and even costumes!!  Several students learned Pattern Drafting for the first time, and got to prove their paper drafts in muslin fabric, creating a body double/ fit model, from which all future patterns in Drafting II and III are created from.  We will be repeating Pattern Drafting I&II classes throughout the summer and fall.
Are you interested in learning to make hats?  We also now teach  millinery classes, making cut and sew hats from patterns, or handblocking on ttaditional wooden hat blocks, in felt and straw!!  Or hone your drawing skills with Fashion Sketching! Whether you are 7 or 70 years young, it's never too late to explore your creativity!
Thistle Cottage Studio offers a warm, inviting, and nuturing environment to do just that!!  Many of our repeat students have been with us for 3 and 4  years!! Many have gone on to be accepted into fashion design schools with advanced skills!!  Some are retired and are enjoying rediscovering  their latent talents.  Whether you are a first time beginner, building a college portfolio, a career professional,  are retired, or looking to refine your existing skills,  our courses are designed to challenge your creativity, and build the skills you need to bring your ideas and goals into  reality!!!
We have continued our tradition of grooming our 11-14 year old students, to enter the annual
Providence Performing Arts Summer Arts Scholarship competition.  This year, we are so very proud to announce our 4th winner in three years!!!  Ruby S. will be using her $500.00 prize award to continue studying Drafting II, and more sewing classes.  We start preparing our students as early as September!! Deadline for entry is March 2013.
Classes at TCS are offered Wednesday through Sunday, with two sessions per day, from noon to 3pm, and 3-6pm. All courses run for 8 weeks ($275.00), and classes are 3 hours long, making it possible to accomplish quite a lot in (24 hours of instruction)  that time frame!!  Class sizes are kept very small--just 2 to 3 students per session, for maximum one to one attention.  As fall approaches, and kids go back to school, after school hours are also available.  We also offer a 4 week, introductory  mini-course, for those on a budget (175.00).  For those interested in registering, we suggest that you do so at least two weeks before your desired start date, to insure your desired time slot, but remember, space is limited, and we are expecting to have a very full calendar this summer!! Payment  is due at registration, at which time your first project is discussed, and your supplies list is explained.  Our rates are the most affordable in the tri-state area!!! And we've done our homework!!!
Please give us a call for more information at 401-231-4343, and please leave us a message, if we don't pick up.  We may be in session.
PS--For your safety and peace of mind, Thistle Cottage Studio now conducts criminal background checks on all incoming students, and the parents of minor students. There is plenty of free parking.  We accept cash, personal check with positive ID.  Credit cards maybe used through our secure site on www.orsinimedici1951.etsy.com.  There is a 7% handling charge when paying by credit card.

Thistle Cottage Studio Blog

A Spring "Flood" of Inspirations at Thistle Cottage Studio

New creative inspirations are sprouting up and flowing faster than the rivers that recently burst their banks here in Rhode Island!! Thistle Cottage Studio's roof held out, thank God!! The Woonasquatucket River, which runs behind our building, thankfully sits low enough in a valley to not have effected us, even at its' 9 foot flood stage! Contemplating my good fortune with a fair share of survivors guilt, I've had the luxury of time to take a deep breathe, and reacess my priorities for the new Spring push in my ETSY shop. All of my fabrics, supplies, finished projects, and yes, even my precious sewing machines and Bernina serger survived!! Ah, what can I say about my Berninas?! Made in Switzerland, and known for their skill in making precision instruments, this machine can sail over six layers of denim, as easily at it can sew the most delicate silk chiffon, without chewing it up, like many other machines I've used! Even the buttonhole foot is computerized, and actually remembers how long the first side of the buttonhole is, then automatically does the bar tack and sews the right side of the buttonhole perfectly!
"Tools that work!!", that's my motto!!
If you've been looking for a great sewing machine, this is THE Rolls Royce of machines, in my opinion; and I've sewn on and sold many sewing machines in my lifetime. A good used Bernina, if you can find one from a reputable dealer, can run you as suprisingly little as $279.00! Bernina now offers a lower price point machine at around $150.00 Even at the lower price point, I have recommended the Bernina to all of my students.
New models can cost as much as $4,000.00 or more.
Finishing up some long awaited half started projects, seemed to be a prudent approach. The work was already cut out, so the first offerings for spring are already up in my shop. Best intentions can easily be displaced by a new material or idea, and like the river, I just had to go with the flow!! When a student placed an order for a 1920's cloche, well, my old hat addiction kicked in, and I was off and running with a whole new collection, in spite of my promise to myself, and my shop announcement to focus on more clothing this year. I am determined to make good on that promise!
Going through my stash of fabrics set aside for hats, I found a bolt of heavy artists' linen canvas and a small, precious group of William Morris Art Nouveau prints by Liberty of London! My next new line of 1920's deep crowned cloches with wired
brims are now under way. Here is a sneak peek into the process of their creation!
The first hat is rendered in the artist linen canvas, and frosted with a crushed hatband of Morris' pastel Art Nouveau print. The lining is a luxurious cream colored Italian dupioni silk.
This second hat, now available at Thistle Cottage Studio, is a marriage of a 1940's barkcloth, with a 1920's deep crowned cloche design. The under brim is worked in the artists' linen canvas, as is the top of the crown. A black hatband of moire' taffeta encircles the crown, finished with a frayed flower of the same barkcloth, and anchored in place with a vintage 1940's art deco style button.
This hat is lined in a yummy shade of buttercream silk charmeuse.
Barkcloth is generally made of coursely spun cotton, and woven into a rough textured tabby weave, thus the name "barkcloth". It was used predominantly as drapery and upholstery fabric in the 40's. I will be repeating this shape throughout the year, and have some secrets still up my sleeve, as I envision what they will look like for fall!
To see the collection as it is progressing, you can find Thistle Cottage Studio on Facebook and Twitter. I must mention that TCS's username on ETSY is orsinimedici1951, and on Twitter is orsinimedici195. It was an irrevocable mistake that I made as a newbie, when I opened my ETSY shop in November of '08. I'm hoping one day that ETSY will find a way for sellers to change that.
TCS's URL is www.orsinimedici1951.etsy.com.
I hope you'll stop by and take a look.
